There's something about swimming, isn't there?
Of just about all the physical activities that I take part in, swimming's the one I'd miss most if \i wasn't able to do it, for instance if the local swimming baths closed for refurbishment.
Our relationship with water is interesting, and quite probably to do with evolutionary psychology. I've always been fascinated by water - whether it was as a ten year old lying for ages in the bath watching my plastic duck float around, later on as a teenager fishing in the lake, or any time I've ever swum in the sea, water has always had a magical draw.
There is a school of thought that believes human beings actually evolved from sea creatures. I can certainly see that in my case that could be true. In fact I love water and the sea so much I eat a lot of seafood, too: crabs, mussels, sardines, tuna. All of which also happen to be nice and healthy, which is a a happy bonus!
Swimming's also a great form of exercise - and can bring about all sorts of health benefits. Swim regularly and you could find your general mood improves as happens with many exercises. It's also a stress buster after a hard day at the office. And regular exercise also lowers our risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
So if you're loooking for a new activity to add to your exercise regime - swimming is a great one to incorporate into your plans. Dive in and enjoy!
